Periodontitis is a type of gum infection that harms the soft tissue and damages the bone supporting your teeth. It causes inflammation in the gum.

Diagnosis

There are a few things that one needs to do in order to diagnose one with periodontitis. Here is the list of things your dentist may perform in order to check and diagnose you.

Review your medical history – A few medications that one might be going through and habits like smoking that can cause a dry mouth is checked for.

Examine your mouth – Plaque or tartar build-up is checked by examining the mouth.

Measure the pocket depth

The pocket depth of the groove between your gums and teeth is measured by placing a periodontal probe.

Take dental X-rays – The dentist might take an X-ray to get a more accurate view of your oral health.

Treatment

There are different types of treatment one can go through but the ultimate goal of the treatment is the same. If you stay away from tobacco and sub-products, the chances of getting better are amplified.

Nonsurgical treatments

Nonsurgical treatment is performed if your periodontitis isn’t advanced. These treatment includes scaling a laser or an ultrasonic device, root planning, and antibiotics. There are high chances that in this stage, your disease will be cured as it hasn’t grown yet.

Surgical treatments

Surgical treatment is performed if the periodontitis is advance. These treatments include dental surgeries like Flap surgery, Soft tissue grafts, bone grafting, guided tissue regeneration, and Tissue-stimulating proteins. All of these surgeries have different ways of treating the patient but the end result remains the same.

Lifestyle and home remedies

These home remedies are suggested in order to prevent any future casualties to happen. This includes:

  • Prevention of tobacco-related products
  • Brushing twice a day
  • Using an electric toothbrush might be an effective way to remove plaque and tartar from developing.
  • Use a soft toothbrush and change your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months.
  • Regularly get a dental clean-up and make sure you prevent any kind of dental illness.
